Flick of the Whisk Cakes offers custom cakes, cupcakes & jar cupcakes for any & all occasion.
The jar cupcakes are one of my most popular products & is what launched my business to success in 2019. The convenience & unique nature of the jar cupcakes is what captures people’s attention.
I was working as an interior designer & felt like something was missing. I wanted to create something of my own that I could be proud of & grow. I made a list of hobbies I wouldn’t mind turning into a business & baking came out on top.
My brand is a black-woman owned bakery, a fact that I’m extremely proud of. People know me for small cakes & beautifully decorated cupcakes. My artistic background definitely plays a part in my decorating style.
Continuing to grow my business & knowing what the next steps should be. Growth can be extremely scary if not planned & I try to make sure I’m making decisions that make sense for my brand while also taking care of myself & mental health.
The jar cupcakes were not planned at all. I was preparing for my first farmers market & I burned all of the cupcakes and cookies I planned on selling. I had these small, 4oz jars in my basement and a lightbulb went off. I baked more cupcakes, put them in the jars, and they were a huge hit. I sold out in the first 2 hours at the market.
Covid-19 turned out to be a blessing in disguise for my business. With people being home & missing their friends, orders started rolling from people wanting to send sweet treats to their loved ones. I was able to go full-time with my business in July 2019 because of all the amazing people that continued to support me during the pandemic.
I came up with the name “Flick of the Whisk” after hearing the song “Flicka da wrist” on the radio. I said “omg flick of the whisk would be genius”
To create a supportive and encouraging network of friends and fellow business owners. Surround myself with people who genuinely want to see me win. Support those who support me.
Make my business accessible to other cities and states outside of Colorado. Be a source of mentorship for others wanting to start and/or grow a business.
Be smarter with my money when I first started my business. I was so excited to be making my own money that I didn’t allocate it properly. I’ve definitely learned my lesson now.
